Ripley Castle

Romance and drama, villainy and heroism all feature strongly in the fascinating and ongoing story of the Ingilbys of 700 year-old Ripley Castle.

If walls could talk, they would tell tales of kings and queens, civil war and plagues. Look for the secret hiding place concealed behind the Knight’s Chamber paneling where papists David and Francis Ingilby hid, and marvel at the tale of the swashbuckling daughter who held Oliver Cromwell at gunpoint in the Library.

Ripley Castle’s grounds contain some of Britain’s largest herbaceous borders, interspersed with fountains and lawns. There are walled gardens that are a pleasure to visit at any time of year, and the kitchen gardens contain rare collections of herbs, spices, fruit trees and vegetables. A walk around the wooded pleasure grounds leads to the lakeside path, where herds of Fallow and Red Deer graze.

There are excellent facilities including tearooms, excellent shops and ample free parking. Within the village is The Boar’s Head, a perfect stopping point for lunches, dinners or just a drink.

The castle is open all year round. For details ring 01423 770152 or visit their website
