Harrogate’s Formal Sunday Lunch – Sunday 27th September 2009

Unaccustomed to public speaking as he is, President Brother Paul Barry presents his Welcome Speech in honour of his guests.

This was at the Formal Lunch which replaced the usual annual Dinner Dance due to the National Conference taking place in Harrogate this year.

Around 70 Visitors, widows, wives and Brothers joined in the celebration which was held at The Cedar Court Hotel.

Province 3N Snuffbox – 14th April 2009

At the 60th Anniversary celebrations of the City of Leeds 137 Circle, a posse from Harrogate went along and claimed the “Snuffbox”. Wetherby put up a fairly feeble argument for a counter claim, trying to bring in some joint member Brothers to boost their numbers, but Harrogate President Brother David Rhodes stood his ground and after a sumptuous dinner came home victorious with trophy. This was so that President Brother David Rhodes could hand over the coveted “Snuff Box” to incoming President Brother Paul Barry as he takes over the reigns at his first meeting.

Harrogate Circle Quiz Night – Oakdale Golf Club - 24th April 2009

Brother Paul Barry got his Presidential year off with a “mind boggling” quiz for 40 Brothers, wives, family and friends as Question Mistress Cath Barry, kept a tight control on the proceedings. At the end of the rounds there were two teams drawing for first place and at one point arm wrestling was nearly needed to split them; in the end a tide breaker was sufficient! Paul’s charity for his year was announced as The Harrogate Homeless Project and it got off to a good start with the winning teams donating their prize money towards this good cause.

Brother Denis Connery surprises himself as he thinks he knows an answer!

The Mitchells and Gallachers have all the posts covered – is it 100% ?

Teams on each table rack their brains for the answers, but who will be the weakest link?

Wow, there are some brains on this table, looks  like they could make a winning side with a bit of training.

I think this team could potentially be a winning side but they look like they’re only here for the beer!

President Brother Paul Barry awards Francis Downing just one point for the two part answer.

I’m The President and it’s my quiz night says Brother Paul – regretfully!

President’s Family Barbeque – Sunday 20th July 2008

A tradition seems to be starting in Harrogate, as the second Circle Barbeque in as many years was held in Brother President David Rhodes’s garden on Sunday 20th July. Seventy Brothers, wives, widows and families attended a super day on one of the days when the summer sun has shone. Bar staff and chefs sprang into action catering for our every need and a most enjoyable afternoon was enjoyed by all. We also took the opportunity to say farewell to Canon Lawrie Hulme, as he is moving onto Pontefract after being with us in St Roberts for nine years. Specialist Catenian craftsman, Bro John Tevlin created a turned wooded candle holder with the Catenian emblem carved onto it as a gift to the Canon for his friendship and spiritual guidance during his residence in the parish.

A word of thanks to all of the ladies who prepared the food, the chefs who cooked it, the Brothers who organised the event and of course very special thanks must go to David and Janet Rhodes for inviting us into their home again this year.

Jim Brophy, Helen McNamara, Mike Carpenter, Marie Brophy and Joe McNamara enjoy the company and atmosphere.

On Friday 20th June, 38 Harrogate Brothers, their wives and families enjoyed a wonderful sun kissed evening of sport and competitive banter, as well as a relaxed picnic on the cricket pitch at Ripley Cricket Club. Hidden sporting prowess, as well as a few pulled muscles, came out of the closet and a variety of skills were on display. The target was set by Brother President David Rhodes, of having 100 guests to match the celebration of the Association’s 100 years anniversary at the Annual Harrogate Circle Dinner Dance this year. The target was easily reached, and exceeded, as The Provincial Director Joe McNally and his wife Philomena, Provincial Guests, Harrogate Brothers, their wives, family and friends all enjoyed a wonderful evening at The Yorkshire Pavilions. As well as a convivial evening being enjoyed by us all, Canon Lawrie Hulme gave a most amusing and pertinent reply on behalf of the guests and £517.00 was raised for the “Clean Water for Life Project”, the Grand President’s nominated centenary charity.
